Connecting with Kanji : Workbook for Beginners

Connecting with Kanji : Workbook for Beginners

This is an excellent introductory-level kanji exercise book for people studying Japanese. It presents a method of efficiently learning kanji and discovering what makes them interesting by encouraging the mental association of kanji that have identical components. The book presents 186 basic kanji, with each section covering eight or nine characters. There are also 59 characters that are to be learned along with the basic kanji.

There are 22 units, each with a very easy-to-understand structure. The first section of each unit is a warmup that presents 17 intuitive pictographs and logograms along with basic information about each kanji. The next section is the main section, which provides illustrations and explanations to help learners remember a kanji structure. The structure of kanji can be explained in many ways, and explanations here sometimes diverge from the history of a character to make them easier to remember.

The book presents kanji that have the same components, but some may be slightly different. Translations are provided in English, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Indonesian. Bolded text within explanations indicates words that express the meaning of the kanji. Each unit also provides a range of exercises to help understand how kanji go together, how they're used in a sentence, and how to distinguish between them. For the sake of review, previously learned kanji are shown without furigana.

A great book for visual learners looking for something to help them start their kanji study!
