The Complete Japanese Syntax, Vol. II: Grammar from a Presentational Perspective
This is the second book of three very advanced-level academic materials that dive deep into the syntax of the Japanese language within the framework of generative grammar.
This second volume focuses on “presentational” as a key word and details the importance of new “data” of syntactic constructions. This idea of presentational language can be demonstrated in English grammatical structures more easily. First the sentence will present X and then it will tell us the relationship with Y. The simplest of these kinds of sentences will be “X is Y”. In Japanese many sentence structures will us “は” for this purpose, but the writer intends to demonstrate other presentational grammatical structures in Japanese beyond those that use “は” as a key component.
Following an introduction, this second volume talks about subjectification, domains of quantifiers, adverbial phrases, pluperfect constructions, and a lot more.
There is a supplementary section at the end of the book to help readers get a fuller understanding of the main essays presented across the 10 chapters.
