JLPT N5 Mock Test [Revised Edition]

This comprehensive workbook can smoothly get you through level N5 of the JLPT examination: it is custom-designed to offer all the preparation you’ll need, in a single (and highly portable) package. Master each aspect of N5 — vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening — through a series of challenges taking the exact same formats you’ll encounter on test day. These include fill-in-the-blank exercises to assess kanji reading ability and understanding of verb conjugation; multiple-choice questions asking you to find the information given in a short passage; and grammatical structure quizzes requiring you to place four given words in the correct sequence.

Further in, the included CD comes into play. Its 57 minutes of spoken Japanese, with an enunciation close to that you’ll hear in the exam room, forms the basis of four mock listening tests. These range from picture-based questions (illustrated manga-style, naturally!) asking you which one of four images is being described by the narrator, to a series of questions based on hearing alone. For the latter you’ll need to choose which one of three spoken responses is appropriate for the given question: these are all short, ‘Nice weather isn’t it?’-style one-liners taken from everyday conversation. As in the N5 test paper itself, all featured kanji are accompanied by furigana.

The book’s final section is what gives it an essential edge over simply studying past test papers. Besides correct answers and transcripts of the CD’s contents, here detailed explanations of each question, including key takeaway points, are given in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese language.

This is the 2015 revised edition of a book originally published in 2011. Like its predecessor, its contents were carefully formulated based upon expert analysis of sample questions published by the JLPT’s administrators, with this revised version containing a slightly increased number of questions.
