Meshiagare – A Culinary Journey through Advanced Japanese
This excellent book takes a unique approach to learning Japanese by pairing it with one of Japan’s biggest exports – its cuisine. With the aim to make Japanese learning fun, either in the classroom or at home, the book uses Japanese food culture as a central theme to improve student’s reading skills and help them learn some new vocabulary.
There are 15 chapters in the book, starting with an overview of Japanese food culture, and then moving on to other topics like ramen, sushi, okonomiyaki, the origins of yōshku, and bento and eikiben. Each chapter has the main reading, some comprehension questions to check the reader’s understanding of the text, and some development questions aimed to allow for class discussions or self-study readers to think more about the topic. There are also some interesting food-related terms and phrases, cooking trivia, and some recipes for some easy-to-make famous Japanese dishes, like tempura, okonomiyaki, miso soup, and onigiri.
Advanced Japanese learners (JLPT N1-N2) will be able to follow the content well, but this text is also appropriate for intermediate Japanese learners (JLPT N3-N4) who may wish to look up the new vocabulary as they follow along.
The text is not grammatically difficult; however, there are lots of new words that are specific to cooking and food, so even fairly advanced learners will be able to pick up vocabulary not covered in previous Japanese language study.
Kanji readings are provided for vocabulary from JLPT N2 level and above, as well as for proper nouns. There are also full English translations of every chapter at the back of the book.
Furthermore, there are vocabulary lists and lots of other multimedia learning resources available on the Meshiagare Web, and a QR code is provided with the book to give you access to these.
This is a really unique book that is highly recommended for all intermediate to advanced Japanese learners. However, with full English translations of each chapter, non-Japanese language students with an interest in Japanese food culture will also be able to enjoy this book.
