The Nihongo So-Matome series, from leading Japanese-language-teaching publishers Ask, are some of the most popular study guides for students preparing for the JLPT. This N3-level kanji textbook, one part of a 5-book set (sold separately), is designed to be used as a six-week study guide. The book is structured in 6 chapters, each containing 7 lessons, with the goal to complete one lesson with 6-7 words every day, with 336 kanji and 850 words in total. Each unit introduces the kanji within a set theme to give some context to help you remember them. There are also illustrations that are especially good for visual learners. All the kanji have English, Chinese, and Korean translations, enabling you to study alone. There are practice questions to test your understanding, and answers are written at the end of the following day’s lesson.

If you follow the study regime presented in the book, from Day 1 to Day 6 every week, you will study kanji and thematically organized vocabulary using that kanji. On Day 7, you will check to see if you have learned the kanji and vocabulary by doing the “Jissen Mondai” (practice examples) that are in the JLPT format.

The amount of kanji you need to learn suddenly jumps at the N3 level, but this book really helps learners put the kanji into context and learn through visual and situational cues. By doing so, the book is designed to not only help you prepare for the test but also increase your vocabulary to help you with your life in Japan. Furthermore, the book also introduces kanji skills, rather than simple memorization, which will help you for the reading section of the JLPT too.
